Don't trust your home improvement project to the lowest bidder, do your homework and find the home improvement company that is right for you! |
For homeowners in Highland, Fulton and across Maryland, deciding it’s time for some much needed home improvements can be a very exciting time, but picking the right home improvement company can be confusing and downright stressful. Not every contractor is right for every home improvement project, so to make sure you pick the contractor that is right for you and your project, you must do your homework.
First, you should always work with a professional home improvement company that is licensed in the state of Maryland and one that is a member of local, state and national associations, such as the National Association of Home Builders and the Home Builders Association of Maryland. You can also ask for recommendations from friends, neighbors and family members who may have past experience working with the company you are researching. Word of mouth advertising is a very powerful tool.
Once you have narrowed down your search, contact your potential home improvement contractor. Some important questions to ask would be:
How long have they been in business?
Do they have a positive, educational and informative website?
Can they provide references from other homeowners they have worked with?
Do they offer flexible forms of payment such as credit cards, personal check or payment plans?
Do they have a formal, professional contract that outlines all the details of the project?
Do they have a substantial, diverse portfolio that displays all of their work?
Do their “in-house” employees perform the work or do they sub-contract out their work?
Have they received any awards or have they been recognized for excellence in their industry?
Will they thoroughly explain all the project details in a manner in which you understand?
Will they provide adequate contact information for the owner, sales representative and project manager in case of a problem or emergency?
Do not trust your home to the lowest bidder! Choose a company that has a solid reputation and one who understands what you are looking to accomplish with your home improvement project.
